Extremely striking perennial plant with large purple-blue flowers and whorled leaves. Attracts large-bodied bumblebees that can access the flowers effectively. Prefers soils that are relatively wet through winter. The status of this species is currently under debate; some question whether it is native to the area and some confuse it with the garden hybrids that were planted all over the island highway. We continue to regard this entity as native because it occurs regularly throughout our Prairie-Oak Ecoregion, extending south into Washington and Oregon and in similar habitats to which it is found in the Victoria Area; wet clay-rich meadow with winter moisture and relatively deep soils. This entity should be carefully planted and not nearby to garden hybrids with which it may hybridize.
